Master Gichin Funakoshi

In 1922 Master Gichin Funakoshi a famous Karate teacher in Okinawa was invited by the Japanese to come and teach Karate. Master Funakoshi established a Karate school in Tokyo,Japan which he named "SHOTOKAN".

"SHOTO" being his Pen name, "KAN" means a large building or house.

This is how our style of Karate came to be named. Today the Shotokan style of Karate is the world's most popular Karate system.

Gichin Funakoshi passed away in 1957 at the age of 88.

This memorial to Master Funakoshi was erected at Enkaku-ji Temple in Kamakura in 1968.

Our Dojo Kun is "Karate ni senti nashi" which translates to "In Karate there is no first strike". Gichin Karate has over 10 dojos located across the Western Cape and is affiliated to KAWP and KSA.
